Over more than six decades, he helped reshape how scientists understand the natural world—not as a set of isolated species, but as a network of relationships. His work on coevolution, developed with Paul Ehrlich in the 1960s, showed how plants and animals shape one another over time. It remains foundational.

Raven is perhaps best known for his long tenure at the Missouri Botanical Garden, which he led for nearly 40 years. He transformed it from a respected institution into a global center for botanical research, conservation, and education, with programs spanning Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

He was also an early and consistent voice on biodiversity loss. Long before it became a mainstream concern, he argued that population growth, consumption, and habitat destruction were driving a rapid decline in species. His framing was direct: understanding the natural world brings with it a responsibility to sustain it.

I first got to know Peter through my grandmother in the 1990s, when I was working on a book about tropical rainforests in college. We stayed in touch over the years, including a collaboration after the pandemic on a project tallying plant species by country. Last year, I visited the Missouri Botanical Garden for the first time—a place that reflects much of what he built.

He combined scientific rigor with a rare ability to engage broader audiences. That combination is not common, and it mattered.

Much of what we now take as standard thinking about biodiversity and conservation traces back, in some way, to his work.
